Multiple media outlets are reporting that the Boston Red Sox have acquired Mark Kotsay from the Atlanta Braves. The 32-year-old Kotsay, who is a solid center fielder and right fielder, was scratched from tonight's lineup before the Braves faced the Florida Marlins.
If the reports are accurate, this is a positive acquisition for the Red Sox. The left-handed hitting Kotsay has a .289 average with six home runs and 37 RBI. He gives the team depth while J.D. Drew is on the disabled list recovering from a herniated disc. Ironically, Kotsay and Drew are similar players. Both are proficient defensive outfielders who can hit for average and some pop. They also know how to get on base. Like Drew, Kotsay's career has been marked with several injuries, but the veteran who has played for Florida, San Diego, Oakland and Atlanta in 12 big league seasons is healthy at the moment.
