Happy Thanksgiving to veteran Sox and Pinstripes readers, and rookies getting acclimated to this rivalry illustrated on the blogosphere! The winter meetings are a couple weeks away, and few free agents have signed, so this is a perfect time to play the You're the GM game.
The rules are easy to follow. You have a bankroll like the New York Yankees, so money is no object. You have a 25-man roster - American League style - so you need a DH and you must determine whether you will carry seven relievers or use six and add another utility player. To see an up-to-date list of available players, visit www.mlbtraderumors.com and click on the 2010 MLB Free Agent List in the MLBTR Features section in the right column.
Here is my roster:
Starting Pitchers
- John Lackey
- Rich Harden
- Andy Pettitte
- Ben Sheets
- Randy Wolf
There are risks here, I know. Harden isn't exactly durable and Sheets is injury prone, yet when both arms are healthy, they are among the most dominant in the game. Lackey as the ace is a no-brainer. Pettitte sowed that he has gas left in the tank. Wolf is ideal as a No. 5 starter. Jon Garland, Erik Bedard and Justin Duchscherer also received consideration.
Bullpen
- Closer - Billy Wagner
- Rafael Betancourt
- Brandon Lyon
- Rafael Soriano
- Mike Gonzalez (LHP)
- Takashi Saito
- Darren Oliver (LHP)
I still think Wagner has a lot left to offer as a closer, though I hope he returns to the Red Sox as a set-up man.
Catchers
- Bengie Molina
- Rod Barajas
Molina is 35, but he is still a proficient catcher, and Barajas is a palatable insurance policy in case Molina gets injured.
Designated Hitter - Johnny Damon
Hideki Matsui is another option, but Damon gives the team power and speed, and he can also play a game here and there in the outfield.
Infielders
1B - Adam LaRoche
2B - Placido Polanco
SS - Marco Suctaro
3B - Chone Figgins
Utility Infielder - Mark Loretta
Utility Infielder - Adam Everett
I chose Figgins over Adrian Beltre at third base because this team needs speed.
Outfielders
LF - Matt Holliday
CF - Mike Cameron
RF - Jason Bay
Backup Outfielder - Rick Ankiel
Bay can play right field, though his arm is nothing special. Ankiel gives the team a backup center fielder whle Damon can serve as a back up in left.
There you have it. Now it's time to hear your thoughts and suggestions.
